The Heart of the Hunter

Greetings Fellow Hunters,

While the focus of this blog will be modern hunters, and modern hunting issues, in order to fully appreciate where we are, and where we are going, we must know where we came from. Hunting has been part of the human condition for thousands of years. And while some of the tools have changed, the fundamental acts of hunting have not. Predator and prey are still conducting themselves in essentially the same ways they did 20,000 years ago. And for most of those 20,000-plus years, the main goal of the hunter was to feed his family, his clan or his tribe. And as this cave art illustrates, the ancient hunter shares one more thing in common with you and me. When he was not hunting, he was thinking about hunting.
I hunt only during the legal seasons, but I am engaged with my hunting, in some way, virtually every day of the year. Barely a day goes by when I do not think about hunting. I am either remembering past hunts or I am dreaming of hunts to come. If I am not thinking about it, there is a good chance I am engaged in some activity that is preparing me for the next hunt, or is connecting me to past hunts. (Nothing connects me to past hunts like thawing out some venison tenderloins, or pheasant breasts and sitting down to enjoy the food that mother nature has provided my family!)
If, like me, you think about hunting 365 days a year there is a good chance you will like this blog and may even feel encouraged to add your own comments. If almost everything you do with your free time is related (even remotely) to hunting, preparing to hunt, or preparing food from a hunt there is a good chance you live The Hunting Way of Life.
And that is what this blog is about. I hope to get more hunters to start using different words to describe who we are and what we do. At first glance, this may seem unimportant, but the more you think about and apply this simple language to your own hunting lifestyle, you will see the difference.
Hunting is NOT a game, it is NOT a sport, and it is NOT a hobby, it is our Way of Life. I you feel like I do, or even if you disagree, feel free to sign on give us your two cents worth. Share some great stories, share some great recipes, and feel free to add some pictures. My end goal is simple, to get more hunters talking a different "language" when they talk about their passion for hunting. Tell us, and tell the world about your passion for hunting, and tell us about your hunting way of life.
For me, in between doing fall yard clean-up chores today, I was shooting my bow getting ready for an upcoming bowhunting trip to KS and NE. And this evening going through my hunting gear to make sure I am ready. I am living my hunting way of life even though I never stepped in the woods today. KS in the peak of the rut, during what most "experts" call the best week to be in the deer woods! What more can a guy ask for?
What a great country!
